A secure PIN, without 1234.
Picked at random on your own device. The codes everyone tries first never come up.
How long should a PIN be?
For a bank card, 4 digits is enough, because the card blocks after 3 wrong attempts. For your phone, tablet or laptop, choose 6 digits or more, since someone can keep trying there. Every extra digit makes the number of possible codes ten times larger.
Which PINs should you avoid?
Avoid anything someone would try first: 1234, 0000, 1111, 1212, your birth year or birthday, and lines on the keypad such as 2580. Codes like these top every list of commonly used PINs. This generator skips them and picks from the rest completely at random.
Is a 4-digit PIN secure enough?
For a bank card, yes. A thief gets 3 guesses and has roughly a 1 in 3,000 chance, as long as your code is not predictable. For a phone, 4 digits is tight: anyone who watches you or can try more often gets further. Use 6 digits or more there.
