Why no capitals or symbols?
On a router, printer or smart doorbell you often type on a small screen or in an app with an awkward keyboard. Lowercase letters and numbers type the same everywhere, and we leave out look-alike characters. The length provides the strength.
Why replace the default password?
Routers and cameras often come with a password on a sticker, sometimes the same for every device of a model. Passwords like these appear in public lists. Replace it during setup with your own random password, so nobody else can take over your device.
Can I make a PIN instead?
Yes. Turn on Numbers only for devices that only accept a PIN, such as some doorbells and locks. Make the code as long as the device allows: every extra digit makes it ten times harder to guess.
